This group was founded by a local, Spring Hill, Florida, mother who has a daughter that was diagnosed with Dyslexia & Dysgraphia in 2006, at the age of 8 - enrolled in public school in Hernando County, Florida. Nikki Pierce formed the support group, Special Students of Hernando, in 2006 when she realized there were not a lot of resources or answers to the questions she had about her daughter's exceptionalities as well as the process to obtain appropriate instruction and accommodations for her daughter in school. In the Spring of 2008, Stacy Walsh joined forces with Nikki to co-direct Special Students of Hernando. Stacy & Nikki met while working on a committee together planning an Autism Awareness Walk. Stacy's son, Gavin, was diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder (an exceptionality on the Autism Spectrum) in 2005, at the age of 6. Facing a lot of the same issues these two woman came together to help the parents in and around Hernando County and the Tampa Bay area. Alone and in collaboration with other organizations Special Students of Hernando is pleased to provide community trainings, conferences, and events - bringing awareness to all exceptionalities. We are here to
help support and educate parents on their student's (child's) rights in
the educational system. Regardless of a child's disability or
suspected disability we are here to help. We work together with each
situation that comes to us. Parents will always be getting the help of
both of us each and every time we assist someone. We are not attorneys - we are parents helping parents. We are all at various stages in our children's educational career and are willing to help other parents who may feel "lost in the system".
