Has Your Child Been Bullied??? Teasing has gone on in schools and neighborhoods for more years than can be counted...but we are not talking about that little bit of teasing here and there...we are talking about BULLYING. The staggering number of children
who are victims of bullies is astonishing.
However, not all school
districts in Florida treat bullying issues the same - though all districts
must adhere to the same Florida Anti-Bullying law. It is time that all school districts be held accountable for what occurs in their schools. We must fight this fight for the children so that we are not dealing with devastating consequences after the fact and then trying to fight this issue. We receive a high number of calls
and confidential e-mails from parents with similar stories about bullying.
Though not all students being bullied have disabilities those that do have
disabilities seem to be an "easier" target for bullies. This must
end and end now. If your child has been bullied at
school we would like to hear from you. Please note: Special Students of Hernando understands that there are MANY school districts in Florida that handle bullying issues to the letter of the law....others do not and the handling can vary greatly from not only district to district but school site to school site. The School Board of Hernando County defines bullying as: A student of group of students who inflict physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students and may involve teasing, threats, social exclusion, intimidation, public humiliation, stalking, physical violence, religious or racial harassment, or destruction of property. Harassment is defined as: Any threatening, insulting, or dehumanizing gestures graphics, use of data or computer software, or written, verbal, or physical conduct directed against the student that: 1. Places a student in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person or damage to his or her property; 2. has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s educational performance, opportunities, or benefits; or 3. has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of a school, this includes retaliation against a student or school employee by another student for asserting or alleging an act of bullying or harassment. If you feel your child has been subjected to bullying, please complete the attached bullying form. **If you are from another school district, please refer to your district's bullying policy - it should be very similar to the one here** Bullying Reporting Forms
